“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them.” — Genesis 1:27

Who am I in God’s eyes?

Maybe you’ve never said that question out loud. Maybe it lives underneath the other questions — the ones about the job, the marriage, the kids, the version of you that everyone else seems so sure of. But it’s there. It hums under everything.

Because here’s what happens when you’re the strong one. You become who everyone needs. The listener. The fixer. The one who shows up with the casserole and the calm voice. And somewhere in all that becoming-for-others, the original you — the one God made on purpose, before anybody needed anything from you — gets quiet.

Not gone. Quiet.

This series is about turning the volume back up.

Before You Were Needed, You Were Wanted

Genesis 1:27 is one of those verses we’ve heard so many times it’s gone soft around the edges. Made in the image of God. We nod. We move on.

But sit with it for a second. Before you did a single useful thing — before you held anyone together, before you earned anything, proved anything, carried anything — you already bore the image of the God who spoke light into existence.

Your worth was settled in the design phase.

That means your identity is not a performance review. It is not the sum of who you’ve helped or how well you’ve held it together. Those things flow from you. They are not the foundation of you. And the exhaustion you feel — the one you don’t tell anyone about — is often just this: living from a self built on being needed instead of being made.

The Image Doesn’t Wear Off

Here’s the part I need you to hear.

You may feel far from who you used to be. Loss changes us. Seasons of carrying too much for too long change us. Maybe you look in the mirror some mornings and don’t fully recognize the person there.

But the image of God in you is not a coat of paint. It doesn’t chip in hard weather. It’s not something you had at your best and lost at your worst. It is the material you are made of. Scripture doesn’t say you were made in His image until. There is no expiration clause.

Which means the version of you that feels buried under everyone else’s needs? Still there. Still His. Still made with intention.

Living Like It

So what do we do with this?

Nothing dramatic today. Just this: the next time you catch yourself measuring your worth by how much you carried, pause and say — out loud if you’re brave — “I was wanted before I was needed.”

Say it until it stops feeling like poetry and starts feeling like fact.

Because it is fact. It’s the first fact. Everything else about you was built on top of it.

Reflect

Take five minutes with your journal today:

When did you first learn that being needed felt safer than simply being known? And what would change if you believed your worth was settled before you ever lifted a thing?

This is Part 1 of the Made in the Image series — four weeks of returning to your original design. Part 2 drops next Monday: what it means that you were made on purpose, for a purpose.

If this found you at the right time, the Strong Friends Letter goes out every Tuesday — one honest story, one reflection, straight to your inbox. [Join us here.]
